Project School Visit:
Selwyn Public School (East York)

Visit sponsored by: Friends of the Environment

In January 2003, we visited Selwyn Public School in Toronto with one of our peregrine falcons. Here is a letter from the school and drawings from the students:

Recently the Grade 4 and 5 students at Selwyn School enjoyed a visit from the Peregrine Foundation representative.  The presentation had an enormous impact on the students and increased their knowledge about environmental issues in general and the Peregrine Falcon in particular.

One of our students, Kevin in Grade 5 said, "It was really exciting to see the Peregrine Falcon up close.  I would never have had the chance to see one in the wild.  I learned that many years ago DDT was used to kill bugs.  The falcons ate the birds that ate the bugs and now the falcons' eggs sometimes don't hatch because the DDT weakens the shells.  When the Peregrine Falcon tried to warm the eggs the shells broke and the hatchlings died."

Another student Jenna told me, "I liked seeing the falcon up close.  I liked the colours on the belly.  The woman told us that the female bird flies faster than the male.  The mother feeds the baby birds.  Falcons nest on tall buildings in the city and some people use a telescope to see them."

Jamie said, "I think it was really cool to see the Peregrine Falcon up close.  I enjoyed the presentation because I learned a lot about the environment.  It's important for us to take care of our environment because the falcon is now an endangered species.  The Peregrine Falcon is one of the fastest divers.  They eat pigeons and are really strong birds."

As you can tell from the students' responses, this presentation had a dramatic impact.  We are grateful that you have provided them the opportunity to learn by seeing and asking questions.  The presenter was an extremely knowledgeable and well-prepared young woman who handled the large group with skill.

Thank you again for this exciting opportunity.

Sincerely,

P. Andrews - Principal
