Project School Visit:
Elizabeth Bagshaw School (Hamilton)

Visit sponsored by: TD Friends of the Environment Foundation

In October 2001, we visited Hamilton's Elizabeth Bagshaw School with our male peregrine falcon "Oscar".  We have not yet received any feedback from the students, but here is a letter from the principal:

Thank you for organizing the visit to my school by the Canadian Peregrine Foundation.  I would also like to thank the "Friends of the Environment" Foundation (TD Canada Trust-Hamilton Chapter) for financially supporting this wonderful presentation on the Peregrine Falcon.  My students were very impressed with the presentation and with the fact that they got to visit with a live endangered species.

It is so crucial that our young children understand that "extinct" means forever.  Recognizing that animals and plants can be removed from an "endangered list" gives them hope that they can make a difference in our world by taking the time to understand the impact of their decisions on the food chain and on their life.  This presentation provided for them an opportunity to reflect on the community of living things and the interaction
which is necessary for survival.

The presenter, Tracy Simpson, was well received by our students as she answered their many questions.  Her enthusiasm for her work was very evident.  The students are still asking questions and wanting to read more about endangered species.  I would recommend this program for children as an enhancement to the Ontario Curriculum.  The grade six students will be beginning a unit on "Characteristics of Flight".  They were intrigued with
the information on the speed of the peregrine as related to the shape of the wings, the feathers and the molting process.  The grade 4 students were able to see first hand aspects of camouflage and relate it to their studies of "Habitats and Communities".

Sincerely,

Diane Aitken
Principal
