Project School Visit:
E. A. Fairman Public School (Whitby)

Visit sponsored by:  Ontario Power Generation

In October 2001 we re-visited Whitby's E.A. Fairman Public School with our young female peregrine falcon "Penny".  Below is a letter from the school:

On behalf of the staff and students, I would like to thank your organization for coming to our school to talk about peregrines and your programs.  The presentation was extremely informative and interesting.  The students enjoyed the interactive format and especially the live falcon!  It was obvious that the students learned a lot about endangered species and ways that communities can help.  We look forward to having you back next year.

Sincerely,

Brian Gillespie
Principal

Visit sponsored by: The New Ontario Trillium Foundation

In October 1999, we made our first visit to a school in Durham Region - E. A. Fairman in Whitby.  We brought with us our 9-year-old peregrine falcon, "Qetesh".  The Grade 5 and 6 classes obviously paid good attention to our presentations, and showed some great creativity and artistic ability in the submissions they sent in below:

The Seven Wonders of the World
by Victoria

There are seven wonders of the world.
Eight if you include a bird.

Not any old bird, one in specific.
The peregrine falcon, they're real terrific.

They soar through the air at tremendous heights.
Taking many long hard flights.

Panama is where some went, but not all,
Come the winter after fall.

The winter time is when
Breeding season comes to an end.

There are now eight wonders of the world,
Including that oh so wonderful bird.

There once was a falcon named Ed
A falcon breeder thought he was dead
He took him inside
His heart full of pride
And with blankets he made a nice bed

Ed got up and spoke
He tried to tell a joke
He tried really hard
Like a medieval bard
But all that came out was a croak

The breeder gave out a big smile
That seemed to stretch out a mile
He thought of a foundation
That could be a falcon station
For falcons that lived in the wild.

The Peregrine Falcon flies up high
Soaring through the bright blue sky.

This bird is king of the blue,
He is always up to something new.

The Falcon's speed cannot be topped,
No this bird cannot be stopped!
There is one thing about this bird,
It is endangered, by a herd.

The herd is us hunting humans of course,
We are killing them with great force.
The Canadian Peregrine Foundation doesn't save the hawk;
They save the falcons, they're the saviour of the flock!
