Project School Visit:
Parkfield Junior Public School (Toronto)

Visit sponsored by: TD Friends of the Environment Foundation

In September 2001, we visited Toronto's Parkfield Junior School with our young male peregrine falcon "Oscar".  Below is a letter from the principal, accompanied by two drawings from the students:

Thank you very much for arranging the visit of Tracy Simpson and Oscar, the Peregrine Falcon, to our school on Friday, September 26.  All of our grade four and five students were invited to this very interesting presentation.

Tracy Simpson was most knowledgeable about Peregrine Falcons.  She used a video tape, and a map to help the children better understand about the life cycle of Peregrine Falcons, and the obstacles they are facing in today's world.  Tracy helped the children understand that because humans are at the top of the food chain, we may encounter the same kinds of problems that the falcons experience due to the use of D.D.T. and other substances.  We need to be very careful with all aspects of our environment.

The teachers will use the information provided by Tracy as they instruct the children in the curriculum areas of science, health, social studies, and mathematics.  The presentation inspired many students to draw pictures that they are looking forward to seeing when they are available on the internet.

This was a very worthwhile program to bring to our school.  On our behalf, please thank The Friends of the Environment Foundation for funding the visit of Tracy Simpson and Oscar, the Peregrine Falcon, to our school.  I know that the children in other schools would benefit from hearing the information about Peregrine Falcons and would like to meet a wonderful bird like Oscar.

Sincerely,

R. Gowdy
Principal
