Project School Visit:
Park Manor Senior Public School (Elmira)

Visit sponsored by:  TD Friends of the Environment Foundation

In January 2002, we visited Elmira's Park Manor Senior Public School with our young male peregrine falcon "Oscar".  Below is a letter from the teachers:

On Wednesday January 23, 2002, we were privileged to have Tracy and Oscar visit our school.  All grade 6 students from our school (approximately 85) were able to learn more about the peregrine falcon at 2 presentations.

The students were enthralled with the video, content shared interactively, and of course, the chance to see Oscar close up.  Discussing how humankind impacts our environment can become theoretical in class and seeing first hand how we can make a difference has more effect on students.  The students talked about it for many days and also wrote about the visit in writing.

The presentation tied into our Science curriculum in two major areas.  The first one in identifying and describing the characteristics of vertebrates and to use these characteristics to classify birds and other vertebrates.  And the other one, in the peregrine's flying abilities which directly related to the Science unit for Grade 6's on the characteristics of flight.

We, as the Grade 6 teachers, would like to thank TD Friends of the Environment Foundation for sponsoring our school.  It was very enjoyable and educational.

Thank you,

Mark Gibson, Carol King, Barb Rieck
