Project School Visit:
Riverview Alternative School (Ottawa)

Visit sponsored by: Friends of the Environment Foundation

In March 2000, we visited Riverview Alternative School in Ottawa.  The students had an opportunity to meet "Scotty", our one-year-old male peregrine falcon.  Below is a short letter from the principal, as well as three letters from students in the classes we spoke to:

The staff and Junior Students of Riverview Alternative School would like to thank the peregrine falcon lecturers and Canada Trust for the opportunity to learn more about this endangered species.

The video and learning units that were provided are excellent and will be used for the next few days as part of the Grade 6 curriculum.  The children were thrilled to have a first-hand look at the bird and we do appreciate the foundation's efforts to support the preservation of these birds.

Again, our thanks to the Canadian Peregrine Foundation and Canada Trust Friends of the Environment for providing this learning experience.

Sincerely

Pat Page Hoisak
Principal

We would like to thank you very much for coming to Riverview Alternative School to share your information on peregrine falcons.

I know my class really enjoyed meeting Scotty.  We enjoyed listening to his vocal chords.  The colours on his feathers were beautiful.  We liked how close we got to Scotty.

Our class would love to go visit the Crowne Plaza in Ottawa to see our peregrine falcons.  We want to make sure that they are healthy and safe so that the continue to thrive and don't become extinct.

We hope people stop using pesticides so that food chains survive.  We were glad to hear that peregrines now receive legal protection in North America.  We hope that other parts of the world will follow our lead.

Thanks again for all of your efforts in helpting to save these very special birds.

Sincerely,

S. Hachen (grade 4)

Thank you for the presentation on the peregrine falcons.  Our class is very interested in the peregrines, and were wondering if there are any programs we could get involved in.

Before the presentation, our teacher Mr. Brickell
gave us interesting sheets with information on the peregrine falcons.  They told us that the DDT was a chemical meant to kill insects, but the birds
that the peregrines eat ate the insects, and then the peregrines ate the birds.  The DDT made the eggs thin, so the population of peregrines lowered.

Your presentation was very impressive.  Our class applauds you for trying to save the peregrine falcons.  Keep up the good work,

M Gagnier (Riverview Alternative School)

On behalf of Riverview junior grades, I thank you very much for coming to our school to talk to us about the peregrine falcon.  You helped us understand the bird and made sure that we understood by asking and answering questions.  Thank you for bringing the most beautiful falcon ever, Scotty.

I never knew that the falcon was endangered.  Thank you very much.  I think
that I speak for us all when I say you taught us a lot about the falcon.

I thank that the video taught us a lot about the falcon's lifestyle.  Thank you very much to the Canadian Peregrine Foundation and Scotty.

Yours truly,

A. Laframboise (grade 6)
