January 2002 -- From this angle, it is apparent that the Female merlin is roughly the same size as its prey, a pigeon which it ate on the ground just metres away from passing pedestrians on the sidewalk.  Note that the merlin lacks the distinct dark malar stripe found on the cheeks of peregrines.
