Toronto Midtown Home Page

Yonge and Bloor area. Nesting attempts have occurred on the Four Seasons Hotel (northeast of Avenue Road and Bloor), but peregrines are seen just as often on the buildings along Bloor in the Yonge - Bay corridor, especially the CIBC tower.

There is often territorial activity around Mount Sinai & Princess Margaret Hospitals (On University Ave., south of College St.) during the first half of the year.

April 27, 2008.

Harry Crawford Reports:

I checked out the Yorkville area starting at 10am. From west of the Four Seasons, nothing was seen. Coming around to the east side, I spotted Hunter on the east side of the Four Seasons. He was on the north-most false balcony. Two minutes later, a female flew off the north side of the building and headed north. Hunter quickly followed. He returned at 10:40 and checked the balcony on the north side of the building, east end. After looking in, he moved over to his original east balcony and disappeared from view. Returning to Yonge and Bloor, I found a female, probably the second one, on the north-west corner of the CIBC building. She remained there until 11:54am.

April 26, 2008.

Harry Crawford Reports:

Hunter was on the south-west corner of the CIBC building at 7:25am, the north-west corner at 8:50am and gone by 10:05am. A female peregrine was on the south-west corner of the same building at 12:45pm and was still there when I left the area at 1pm.

April 25, 2008.

Harry Crawford Reports:

A female peregrine was on the west side of the CIBC building from 6:51 until 7:36am when she flew off to the west. Hunter took up the south-west corner of the building for a brief time at 7:55am. The second female was on the west side of the CIBC building from 8:25 until 11:05am. At 9:30am, Ranger was seen on the north side, second from the east balcony, on the Four Seasons. She took off towards the east at 10:10am. Hunter was on the south-west corner of the CIBC building from 11:08 until 11:20am. The second female was on the north-west corner from 11:40 until 12:05pm. Hunter was back on the north-west corner at 1:20pm and was seen on the south side, mid level at 3:27pm, feeding. The second female was on the west side of the CIBC building at 4:10pm and was gone by 5:03pm. At 4:35pm, two turkey vultures were circling the Yonge and Bloor area, probably from the Bloor and Sherbourne area.

April 24, 2008.

Harry Crawford Reports:

Hunter spent the time between 7:22 and 7:55am on the south-west corner of the CIBC building. He was back in the same location at 8:25am. In Yorkville, I found a female on the north side of the Four Seasons on the ledge of the east-most false balcony at 2:35pm. Ten minutes later, Hunter hopped up from the floor of the balcony and perched on the balcony just to the west. The female immediately jumped down into the east balcony, just like a nest handoff. Hunter then disappeared down to the floor of the adjacent balcony. He made a brief appearance on the south-west corner of the CIBC building at 4:05pm.

April 23, 2008.

Harry Crawford Reports:

Between 6:45am and 9:30am, a male and female peregrine were seen in the Yonge and Bloor area, most often on the CIBC building. At 10am, I found a female on the east side of the Four Seasons. She was joined by a male at 10:28am and then both birds disappeared to the east. This took place on the east side, north most false balcony on the Four Seasons. Either the original nest has failed, or the second female is still around and the male is courting her.

April 22, 2008.

Harry Crawford Reports:

Both peregrines, at least a male and a female, spent 10 minutes on the west side of the CIBC building at 7:10am. The male was back at 7:54am and hung around the building until just after 9:45am. I witnessed what appeared to be a nest handoff at 10:40am at the Four Seasons. Both male and female appeared from the floor of the false balcony, the female to the north-east corner of the roof and the male somewhere towards the south. This was at the false balcony on the north side at the extreme east end - opposite of the one from yesterday. I left at 10:50am and the female was still on the roof. When I got to Yonge and Bloor at 10:55am, the male was on the south-west corner of the CIBC building, leaving a few minutes later. The male was back on the CIBC building at 12:08pm, feeding. A male and female were circling above Yonge and Bloor at 6:32pm and the male was on the south-west corner of the CIBC building at 6:47pm.

April 21, 2008.

Harry Crawford Reports:

I watched Hunter take up a number of positions on the west side of the CIBC building between 6:15 and 10:50am. After he left the area, I went over to Yorkville to see if I could see a nest handoff. It turns out that Hunter just moved to the north-west side of the CIBC building and was not in Yorkville. At 11:22am, Hunter was back circling north of the Four Seasons, was immediately joined by Ranger and together, they started to chase a third peregrine. This bird was a female, the same size as Ranger [so it likely wasn't Wind]. With much loud vocalization, they circled the area and then moved off to the north. Hunter came back and went into the nest ledge almost immediately, likely to continue incubation. Ranger eventually came back and took up the north-east roof of the Four Seasons. At 11:37am, Hunter came off the nest ledge, mated briefly with Ranger and took off towards the CIBC building at Yonge and Bloor. Ranger immediately went into the nest ledge [north side, west-most false balcony]. Hunter remained on the CIBC building, south-west corner, until 11:50am. He returned briefly at 12:51pm and again at 5:35pm.

April 20, 2008.

Harry Crawford Reports:

Either Ranger or Hunter was in the Yonge and Bloor area from 6:44am until around 7pm. Hunter spent the most time in the area, preferring the west side of the CIBC building. When Ranger was around, she used the same area including the condo spire at Bloor and Bellair as well as the roof ledges at 77 Bloor West. The same pattern was seen on Saturday. Trips to Yorkville still did not see a nest handover.

April 18, 2008.

Harry Crawford Reports:

Hunter was on the north-west and south-west corners of the CIBC building between 6:45 and 7:28am. Ranger spent 10 minutes on the Bloor and Bellair condo spire at 9:10am. I arrived at Yorkville at 9:10am, finding Hunter on the north side of the Four Season's roof. He circled the building just above roof level at 9:22am and settled on the north-east corner of the black penthouse roof of the hotel. He disappeared to the east at 9:37am and returned to the same penthouse location 5 minutes later. He was still there when I left the area at 10am.

Hunter was on the north-west corner of the CIBC building at 11:30am and was still there at 12pm. At 2:45pm, I was treated to a spectacular display of precision flying. Ranger and Hunter were circling each other and playing tag in the sky above Bloor between Yonge and Bay. At one point, Ranger flipped over on her back and they touched talons. This was short-lived as they drifted back towards Yorkville at 2:51pm. A few minutes later, I thought they were back but a closer look found that Hunter was chasing a red-tailed hawk and was escorting it out of the area.

Hunter spent between 3:30 and 3:46pm on the west side of the CIBC building. He was back on the south CIBC logo at 4:04pm, remaining there until 4:48pm. During this stay, he made two circular trips just north of 44 Charles West and came within 10 feet of where I was watching from. I felt I could have reached out of the window and touched him. 5:45pm found him circling above Bloor between Bay and Yonge.

April 17, 2008.

Harry Crawford Reports:

Ranger flew in from the west at 7:45am and landed on the south-east corner of the CIBC building. By 8:05am she had relocated to the south-west corner and then disappeared from view by 8:30am. A trip to Yorkville found who was likely Ranger, flying from the roof area of the condo across University Avenue, circling the Four Seasons just above roof level, and returning to the condo. This was at 2:27pm. She had landed on the south-east corner of the building and proceeded to shower the intersection of Prince Arthur and Avenue Road with feathers. At 2:52pm, she took off to the south, flew above Bloor West and then headed back to the area of the Four Seasons. Hunter wasn't seen during this time and it was assumed that he was incubating the eggs.

April 16, 2008.

Harry Crawford Reports:

When I first looked this morning at 6:45am, Ranger was on the south-west corner of 77 Bloor West, remaining there until 7:15am. 9:55am found Hunter on the south-west corner of the CIBC building. Ranger was on the west side of the CIBC building from 11:10am until 11:38am. No activity was seen at the Four Seasons when I checked around 11am.

April 15, 2008.

Harry Crawford Reports:

Hunter was first seen today at 6:25am on the south Bay logo. He quickly took off out of view, chasing a small bird. He was back in the area at 9:12am, this time on the south-east corner of the CIBC building. At 10:55am, one of the peregrines was on the roof of the Four Seasons in Yorkville. It was above the east false balcony. There was no sign of the other bird. Hunter was back at the CIBC building at 12:42pm, remaining on the west side until around 1:35pm. Ranger appeared on the west CIBC roof at 4:16pm, moved to the west logo at 4:56pm and disappeared from view around 5:58pm.

April 14, 2008.

Harry Crawford Reports:

Ranger was on the south side of the CIBC building from 6:40am until 6:55am. Hunter was seen in the same location at 11:40am, moved to the south CIBC logo by 12:25pm and was still there when I left the area at 1:15pm. I found him on the east side of the Four Seasons at 2:40pm, on the second balcony from the north, facing in. He was back on the south CIBC logo between 4:02pm and 4:38pm.

April 14, 2008.

Linda Woods Reports:

Mark and I have just returned from investigating the site at the Four Seasons Hotel in Yorkville in Downtown Toronto. And good news, Ranger and Hunter are incubating 4 eggs. Harry has been keeping a close on this site for months and the past few weeks he has reported seeing only one of the adults at a time, and encouraged Mark to check it out closer. Mark did indeed check it out and by the standards of a territorial peregrine, made it much more up close and personal. ( Glad I wasn't out there) Holding true to their history of being aggressive, today was no different. I did get pictures, but was not quick enough to capture the "event' , I only managed sound effects. And yes they are very protective of this nest site! Lets cross our fingers for a successful hatch this year.

April 13, 2008.

Harry Crawford Reports:

At 6:52am, Hunter was seen circling the CIBC building at Yonge and Bloor. He landed on the west side of the roof [rather unusual]. By 7:15am, he made a brief visit to the south-west corner, his usual spot. Hunter returned to the same spot at 8:14am and remained there until 9:10am. When I was on Yonge Street, I spotted a turkey vulture coming in from the west. It circled the Manulife Centre, headed south above Yonge and settled on the roof area of an apartment building on Dundonald. This was around 10:30am.

10:56am found Hunter on the south side of the CIBC building. By 11:40am, he had moved up onto the south facing logo and was last seen there at 12:15am. I made a trip to Yorkville around 11:15am but didn't see any sign of Ranger. At 1:26pm, I spotted both peregrines on the CIBC building. Ranger was on the south side of the building and she took off towards Yorkville shortly after, at 1:32pm. Hunter was back on the south logo and more or less remained there until 3:55pm. He made a few brief trips around the area during this time. He was back on the logo at 5:50pm for a brief visit.

April 12, 2008.

Harry Crawford Reports:

When the fog lightened enough at 7:53am, Hunter could be seen on the south-west corner of the CIBC building. He remained there until 8:25am. Heavy fog prevented any further sightings on Saturday.

April 10, 2008.

Harry Crawford Reports:

Ranger was first seen this morning at 5:55am on the south side of the CIBC building. She moved to the south-east corner at 6:30am when she was joined by Hunter. They both disappeared after a session of copulation. Hunter reappeared on the same corner at 8:20pm and was still there 10 minutes later when I left for work. A quick trip to Yorkville found Ranger on the east side of the Four Seasons at 2:50pm. She was on the false balcony, second from the north. I was there for 20 minutes - she remained where she was and there was no sign of Hunter.

April 9, 2008.

Harry Crawford Reports:

Hunter was first seen feeding on the west side of the CIBC building at 7:10am. He remained in the area, taking up various positions on the building and was still there when I left for work at 8:30am. 2:30pm found both peregrines on the north side of the Four Seasons Hotel. Ranger was on the false balcony ledge, second from the east while Hunter was on the balcony at the west end. I left the area 15 minutes later with no change in their position.

April 3, 2008.

Harry Crawford Reports:

Hunter was first seen on the north-west corner of the CIBC building at 6:40am. At 7:48 and 8:30am he was spotted on the south-west corner of the same building. A visit to Yorkville found Hunter on the Four Seasons east roof at 2:30pm and Ranger on the north side of the building on the west-most false balcony. By 2:42pm Ranger had relocated to the north-east corner of the roof and was quickly joined by Hunter for some intensive copulation. At 2:55pm both birds were observed high above Cumberland and Bellair chasing and tagging each other -- standard courtship activity.

April 2, 2008.

Harry Crawford Reports:

8am, found Hunter on the south-west corner of the CIBC building. By 8:30am he had moved over to the west side. Later in the day, at 1:45pm, he was on an east facing false balcony at the Four Seasons Hotel, facing inwards.
