!!! Second clutch of eggs gone missing

May 15, 2008 - Toronto - Four Seasons

Mark Nash Reports:

Sadly,we have received and update on Ranger and Hunter that has confirmed our observations.

Ranger and Hunter created a second nesting site, which we had reported to you last week. This nesting site was located on the buildings North East Side and was absolutely inaccessible to the public. Reports indicated that the nest had three eggs but it was later confirmed that four eggs were present.

With this being said, sadly I must report that while conducting a general patrol this morning, I passed by the nesting site and neither Ranger nor Hunter were present. Upon further inspection I noted that all four of the eggs were also gone.

Do we have a possible second clutch?

May 11, 2008 - Toronto - Four Seasons

Harry Crawford Reports:

Hunter visited the CIBC building several times early this morning and was also seen chasing a small bird in the area at 8:10am. What was interesting was what happened at 11:05am. Hunter flew from the CIBC building in one great stoop and landed on the north-most balcony on the east side of the Four Seasons Hotel. He faced inwards and vocalized. Moments later, Ranger appeared from the floor of the balcony and Hunter took her place. NEST ANYONE! Ranger then flew over to the west side of the Bloor and Bellair condo, the one with the metal spire but chose to pick a concrete roof abutment. In the afternoon, Hunter made brief trips to the CIBC building at Yonge and Bloor.

Still on the east side

May 10, 2008 - Toronto - Four Seasons

Harry Crawford Reports:

At 8:40am, Hunter flew in from the south of the Four Seasons Hotel, landed on the balcony ledge [east side, north-most false balcony], dropped down to the floor [out of view] and then was back up on the ledge less than a minute later. He was still there at 8:55am when I left the area. I didn’t see any activity in the area on my trips to Yorkville on Thursday and Friday. Hunter still appears frequently on the CIBC building at Yonge and Bloor.

Love on the east side

May 07, 2008 - Toronto - Four Seasons

Harry Crawford Reports:

Hunter made his usual appearances on and around the CIBC building this morning, just as he has in the last few days. I first saw him at 6:08am and just before I left the area at 8:25am. The visits are brief and frequent. I checked the Four Seasons at 2:24pm and found Ranger on an east side false balcony, second from the north.  She was facing in towards the glass. At 2:33pm, Hunter flew in from nowhere and intense copulation took place. Ranger disappeared from view and was not visible on the north side of the building. Hunter took off to the south-west corner of the CIBC building at Yonge and Bloor. He disappeared from view at 2:52pm.

!!! New clutch of eggs - 2 new eggs observed!

May 06, 2008 - Toronto - Four Seasons

CPF Volunteer Reports:

We have wonderful news with regards to Hunter and Ranger. We have viewed a new nesting site on the North East side of the building. There are currently 3 eggs that are being watched extremely carefully by the pair. The eggs seem to be of a good size.
Lately we have seen two birds that have been leg bands, which we assume are Ranger and Hunter, but we have also observed another Peregrine in and around the building that appears to have no band, however this is only at a distance so I could be mistaken.

Just wanted to pass along the happy news that we have eggs again!!

!!! The three eggs are gone!

May 05, 2008 - Toronto - Four Seasons

Mark Nash Reports:

We have sad news to report today, as it appears that the three eggs that Ranger and Hunter were incubating are gone. Linda and I conducted a site visit today at the request of the Four Season Hotel to take a look at the situation to give them an update on the status of the birds given all of the territorial squabbling that has been happening with two adult females that have been observed fighting at this nest site in recent days. The reports have been streaming in that there has been some squabbling with the resident adult female - (named Ranger) and another unidentified female here at the Four Season nest site. We can only speculate that increased stress as a result of these territorial battles between the two females has caused Ranger to destroy her eggs. While this is unusual for this particular pair given the long history that we have on this pair, we have documented this happening over the years at several other nest sites with other territorial nesting pairs with increased stress. Our fingers crossed that Ranger and Hunter will attempt to produce another clutch of eggs, as it is still early in the season for this to happen.

Action on the east side

May 04, 2008 - Toronto - Four Seasons

Harry Crawford Reports:

On my trip to Yorkville, I spotted Ranger (no doubt about who she was) on the east side of the Four Seasons. She was on the
north-most false balcony and hadn’t moved up until I left the area at 10:50am. During this time, I did not see Hunter but at 10:14am, two turkey vultures circled above the hotel for a few minutes and at 10:24am, a cormorant did the same. None of these birds were challenged. Hunter was spotted briefly on the south side of the CIBC building at 11:58am and on the south Bay logo at 2:52pm.

Fog, rain and more fog

May 03, 2008 - Toronto - Four Seasons

Harry Crawford Reports:

There were very few opportunities to view the peregrines today because of the fog and rain. Hunter was on the south-west corner of 77 Bloor West at 8:18am. He moved to the south-west corner of the CIBC building at 8:27am and eventually to the east CIBC antenna at 9am before disappearing from view.

Both off the nest

May 02, 2008 - Toronto - Four Seasons

Harry Crawford Reports:

When I got home at 1:32pm, Ranger was on the south-west corner of 77 Bloor West. At 2:03pm, she was circling above the building with a male, likely Hunter, and both flew off towards Yorkville. At 2:55pm, a male and female were on the west side of the CIBC building. The light wasn’t great so I couldn’t tell if the female was Ranger. They were both gone by 6pm.

Wednesday

April 30, 2008 - Toronto - Four Seasons

Harry Crawford Reports:

A male peregrine was on the south-east corner of the CIBC building at 6:10am, remaining there until 6:36am. A female then took up the east CIBC antenna for a brief time at 7:26am. A male returned to the south-west corner of the same building at 7:40am and stayed until 8:05am.
