Site Check at Canada Square; Down to Two Eggs

April 27, 2012 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Bruce Massey stopped in at the Canada Square nest site to check in on Haven and Stormin’ and their progress this year.  A few weeks ago when Bruce attended, Haven was incubating 3 eggs on the west side of the building on the ledge just south of the original nest ledge.  Today, Bruce stayed on the site for about an hour and was able to see Haven get up and reposition herself at which time he could only see two eggs in the scrape.  Bruce was also able to see the shards of the third egg that obviously was not viable.  We will continue to watch the pair as progress towards a hatch continues.  Check back soon as there are pictures to come!!

Out On A Nice Warm Day?

April 25, 2012 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Frank Butson Reports:

From Lyn:I saw both adult Canada Square peregrines today.
I had been perched in my usual spot for ages with nothing to be seen until Haven (the female) flew in. She came from the west side of the Rio-Can building, so possibly from Duplex Ave, and flew along Eglinton Ave until she was between the Heart and Stroke and the Canada Square buildings at the corner of Yonge and Eglinton. She circled a couple of times then simply flew up to the southwest corner of Rio-Can. There she preened, sat, stretched and waited for a while before taking off on the east side and up Yonge street.
I continued sitting, waiting and hoping and was rewarded quite a while later by the sight of Stormin (the male), flying over the Metro Police Station and onto the OLD nest ledge where he appeared to drop a food parcel. I was struggling to get the binocluars working as this had taken me by surprise. He sat for a minute and chuk-chuk-chukked then flew to the south face of the Rio-Can building where he sat, six floors from the top and called again. After just a minute or two he flew up Yonge street as well.
I waited for about another fifteen minutes before going home and in that time I did not see anyone on or near the new nest ledge nor was the food parcel retrieved.

We are glad Lyn is back and look forward to her reports. Thank Lyn.

!!! Much better news today - 3 Eggs and full time incubation is underway!

April 04, 2012 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

CPF Postmaster Reports:

April 4th - 2012

We have much better news to report today!!
We are very pleased to report today after speaking with Bruce, that he was able to confirm with the building management that the resident peregrines at the Canada Square at Yonge & Eglinton are currently incubating at least 3 eggs. With the assistance and support of building management allowing Bruce access to the upper floors to get a visual of the new nest site through the windows, Bruce was able to confirm that the resident adult female was in fact involved in full time incubation.

While Bruce was only able to see a single egg during this visit, it was quite obvious to him that the adult female had other eggs under her.

It appears that the pair have chosen a different ledge to nest on this year, but the ledge is still on the upper elevations on the west side of the building.

I have included new photos of the west side of the building high-lighting the new nest ledge with an arrow where the pair have chosen to set up house this year.

Fingers crossed that the pair are successful again this year in hatching and producing young!
Stay tuned…….

!!! Some late sad news to report regarding a 2010 juvenile named Typhoon - banded Black 6 over D

April 03, 2012 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

CPF Postmaster Reports:

April 2012
A Juvenile Peregrine Falcon - Black banded *6 over D found October 7, 2010

We are sad to report that we have just found out that Typhoon, one of the young peregrines produced at the Canada Square nest site in 2010 was found back in October of 2010 with server injuries and had to be euthanised due to his injuries.

The below report and information has only just been sent to our attention - (April 3rd-2012)..

Location found: St. John St - Toronto Ontario
History: Found on October 7th - 2010, contained and brought in by Toronto Animal Services: - Found in a residential backyard, wings spread out in defensive posture, it was sitting on its bum. Something wrong with legs. Tried to fly, got a few feet, wing sticking out funny. Did not see trying to hop or walk around. Was drinking rain water from gutter.
Assessment by attending vet: Right leg flaccid and non-functional, old open fracture of Tib/fib with 3-4 mm of dead bone exposed. Sadly we were told, that the bird was untreatable due its injuries and had to be euthanised by the attending vet.

!!! Disappointing news!!

March 24, 2012 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

CPF Postmaster Reports:

This morning we received a call from Bruce Massey reporting that on-going building work was underway at the Canada Square nest at the Yonge & Eglinton nest site, with cables / ropes hanging down from the roof area that were laying directly over and in front of the nest ledge where the peregrines nested in last year.

While both resident adults were visible throughout his observations, neither of the adult peregrines were observed going near the west elevations where they had previously nested and produced offspring last year.

As a result of the mornings observations, the resident adults gave him no indication that nesting activity or eggs were being attended too at this time.
Stay tuned for more information……….

Latest From Canada Square

January 30, 2012 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Frank Butson Reports:

Latest report for the Canada Square peregrines, Jan 30th 2012.
Lyn Reports:
I was out and about and went south across Eglinton Ave and checked for the peregrines - not a feather to be seen.
I then went on a couple of errands north of Eglinton Ave and when I was coming back down Yonge street I saw one of the peregrines all fluffed up and sitting on the railing, north east corner, one floor below the nest level on Canada Square. I looked for and found the mate sitting on the highest *window upright*, on the east face of the Heart and Stroke (H & S) building. I had some business in a bank and endured the long line up. When I came out the bird from Canada Square had gone but the one on H & S was still there. I carefully scanned the top of the H & S building and saw the *missing* peregrine tucking into a late lunch. The mate just sat on the perch it was on and was all fluffed up not even bothering the bird who was eating.
Unfortuntely, I of course was out without binoculars. Because it was such a grey day I was unable to get colour on either of the peregrines. Nor was I able to get a size difference as both of them were fluffed against the wind and cool air.

Cheers
Lyn

Stormin and Haven Spotted

January 24, 2012 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Frank Butson Reports:

Lyn Reports:Canada Square Peregrines, Tuesday, January 24 2012.

I was heading south on Yonge street towards the Yonge-Eglinton intersection yesterday, when I saw a peregrine fly east from the intersection over the buildings on the north side of Eglinton Ave east. I hurried down to the intersection but missed it over the building. I stood on the corner staring along Eglinton east and saw three small birds fly across Eglinton, north to south and they were hurrying! Continued watching after they had gone and saw the peregrine giving chase.

I hung out at the corner a few minutes longer to be rewarded with the sight of a peregrine, carrying lunch, struggling against the wind, trying to land on the south east corner of Rio-Can where it had its meal. A second peregrine was in the air diving on the feeding bird and circling both the Rio-Can and Heart and Stroke buildings as well as flying over the Canada Square building. A brief sighting but the two peregrines are still definitely in the area.

Cheers

Lyn

Canada Square Adult Check In and News

December 01, 2011 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Today we have both an update and some news regarding the resident pair at the Canada Square Building. First off, a check in with the pair as reported by Lyn:

Two peregrines were spotted on top window uprights of the Rio-Can building, south face. All fluffed up against the wind they were in the full sun and looked cold. No activity from them but I did not stay out in the cold for very long!

Lyn

Thank you Lyn for keeping an eye on Stormin and his female!!

In the news department, the unbanded female that has been resident here for the last 3 years has been given a name by Neil Armstrong and his amazing staff at Northam Realty Advisors Ltd. Their team has decided to call her Haven, a most incredible name for this bird!

Thanks go out to the buidling management for their efforts to name their adult female and Lyn for her continued vigilance of this pair.
