October - December 2001

Sunday December 30, 2001
Harry Crawford reports:  At around 9:45am, Angel could be clearly seen from the street, sitting on the top of the nest site camera.  From the video camera in the lobby, Marco could be seen standing on the nest box, relaxing on one talon.

Marcel Gahbauer comments:   Today was the annual Toronto Christmas Bird Count.  These two peregrines, in addition to those observed by Harry Crawford and Paul Marshman at the Uptown Toronto, Midtown Toronto, and Downtown Toronto sites contributed to a record high number of peregrines being counted.  Including also the individual spotted by Karl Konze in the Don Mills area, and a juvenile observed by John Carley on the Leslie Spit, the new record now stands at 9 individuals (though we hope to see the number continue to rise in future years).  For the time being, we are particularly interested in any further observations of the juvenile seen by the lake, and welcome any reports of it at marcel@peregrine-foundation.ca

Tom Moreau and Diane Brockman report:
Today, we saw Marco on the box.  Recently, we have seen Angel but never do see the two of them together.  Saturday, we saw a red-tail being attacked by a crow at Bloor and Royal York around noon.  They did not seem to make contact but the crow was persistent.

Marcel Gahbauer reports:  Several weeks have passed since the last update, but there has not been much noteworthy to report.  Tom Moreau and Diane Brockman observed Angel preening on the nest at around noon on December 1, and there have been assorted other reports of both adults on the nest tray and/or video camera housing over the past month.  It looks like they are nicely settled in for the winter.

Friday November 9, 2001
Marcel Gahbauer reports:   It appears that Marco and Angel are carrying on the tradition of their predecessors Toby and Alberta, both in terms of remaining on territory during the winter, and also defending it vigorously against all intruders.  A juvenile Red-tailed Hawk was found dead outside the Clarica Centre on Wednesday afternoon and brought to the CPF Falcon Watch Centre.  To our knowledge nobody witnessed what happened, but considering that the hawk had a broken neck and no other visible injuries, a reasonable guess is that it flew too close to the nest site, was attacked by one or both of the peregrines, and while attempting to escape from them flew into one of the towers at high speed.  It doesn't appear that the peregrines made actual contact with the hawk, so likely they were simply trying to chase it away rather than kill it.

Marcel Gahbauer reports:   Marco and Angel are still putting in regular appearances at the nest site, and appear to be remaining for the winter once again.  Norma Pennells observed Angel on the nest box staying out of the rain on Friday morning, and also saw both birds on the ledge the day before, with one of them perched on the camera housing.

Friday October 5, 2001
Marcel Gahbauer reports:   There has been little news from Etobicoke lately, though Norma Pennells reported to me today that Marco and Angel continue to be seen regularly.  If you do have any observations to report from the Etobicoke site, please send them to me at marcel@peregrine-foundation.ca so that we can continue to keep up to date on the activities of this pair.
