May 18, 2012 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

CPF Postmaster Reports:

May 18th - 2012 - Banding Day

A great day in Windsor today, as four healthy hatchlings were banded and returned safe and sound to their parents without incident. A huge thank you too ALL who made the day such a great success! With more than 150 plus people in attendance throughout the event to witness some of Windsors newest residents, the four young baby peregrine hatchlings were sexed, banded, checked for their health, photographed, named and returned to their waiting parents in record time.

With the Ministry of Natural Resources at the helm and at the banding table, CPF Chapter coordinators and CPF head office staff and volunteers, the four young hatchlings were banded in record time and declared healthy.

CBC radio held a “name the chick contest” on live radio the day before, and other entries from General Brock Public school, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and our hosts of the banding, The Canadian Transit Company - and the Ambassador Bridge, the young hatchlings were identified as two females, named - Viper and Twitter, and two males names General Brock and Eddy.

80 plus students from the General Brock public school were on hand to witness the banding with CTV TV , CBC and the Windsor Star all on hand to cover the event.

The young hatchlings were weighed, sexed, aged and named, then banded and returned to their parents back up on the nest ledge. Marion Nash from the Canadian Peregrine Foundation performed the extraction from the bucket boom lift with the assistance of the Canadian Transit Company boom operator who both hosted the banding event and provided the boom truck and bridge staff to get us to and from the nest ledge.

With hundreds of pictures and live video footage taken throughout the day, radio, TV and newspaper all in attendance, we can say with all confidence that this was the most photographed event of the day in Windsor for sure!!! A HUGE THANK-YOU goes out to all of the CPF volunteers, supporters and sponsors, and members of the community that came out to assist and support this happening!!!
