Food exchanges, letters, hovering…Sam’s alright!!

July 02, 2022 - Toronto - Don Mills and Eglinton - Amexon

Cathy Kerr Reports:

SPOT CHECK DON MILLS/AMEXON : I went over yesterday to make sure that the fireworks didn’t bother Sam . He flew in from the east, did some amazing hovering!! Then he was off… I was going to leave but saw a parent off by the condos across the DVP (highway).. Saw Sam fly out for a transfer.. Couldn’t tell if he got it.. Both disappeared then saw parent on lower roof of the condos looking down. Looked with bins, found him! He was on the outside of the glass balcony. At first couldn’t understand why he didn’t leave and then realized that he had his meal!! And wasn’t giving it up either. Stayed there and ate… Until the owner of the condo came out chased him off with a towel!!! Watched him fly off… And lost him. I stayed as long as I could but had to go….. I called Sally and we went back last evening. As we were driving up we stopped at a parking lot across from the condos and as we just got out of my car… We saw Sam chasing a parent! Yay.  We drove  over to the site and just arrived to see him chase a parent off the letter lol. Good job Sam! He tried for another transfer but I’m afraid the daycare below is going to find a yucky package on Monday!! We left him high on a ledge and headed over to see how the fab four was doing….

Sam is progressing!!

SPOT CHECK DON MILLS/AMEXON:  Sally and I wrapped up the watch with a quick visit on Tuesday(I went in the morning…he was still on the rooftop ) and since Tuesday night was more of the same..done! He was keeping his height so all good. Sally was driving by on Wednesday so they stopped in late…here is her report:

SPOT CHECK: Wednesday June 29th, approx 8:30pm.
Don asked if I’d like to stop in and check for Sam on our way home. Didn’t have my bins or camera sadly so couldn’t identify who was parent or Sam.
One parent on the roof above the nest ledge.
One on the intel “i” letter and was sort of pancaked so wondered if the parents were settling down, and maybe Sam was on a ledge. But then a parent flew over me to the intel letters, flew by the one on the “i” and by the screaming chase that followed, I figured that had been Sam. The parent had come by with food. A fabulous chase around to the west side of Sony building, where the parent attempted a food exchange, but Sam missed it. Parent swooped down to catch and I lost sight of them briefly around the Sony building, but by this time the other parent had joined, as Sam looked like he might be getting a little ahead of himself. Then all three were above us in between the two buildings, over the Goodlife parking arcade and around Sony building, reappearing over the parking lot and then split, with one heading to the intel “t”, another out of sight, and a parent on one of the ICICI letters. Not sure who was who at the end, but thought maybe Sam was on a ledge for the night, with his bedtime snack.
So our Sam is doing great!!
Thanks Sally for the report and the pictures(from Tuesday)

Sam is staying high!!

DAY 3  FLEDGE WATCH DON MILLS /AMEXON :
Well, I arrived to find Sam back on the roof of 250 building… Again. Sally joined me shortly after and got to watch the little lump lol. And again, he sat there ALL day… Now it was a windy day so maybe he was being cautious? But his parents tried from time to time to get him off, then they spent lots of time on the Forrester building again. Mom finally took a nice package and teased him with it, even landing on the rooftop, had a little tug of war with him and then took it over to the nest building rooftop. Well that finally got him moving and he finally flew over to 150, missed landing beside mom but he got to her and grabbed the prey. Don’t know how much he got as it was quite windy up there. But he did ok. Sally had to go. Mark joined me shortly after and then I headed out to feed the pets. When I got back Sam treated us to a few lovely flights and he ended up on the top level of 250 where we left him for the night. Sally and I will finish the watch tomorrow night as he is staying high and improving with every flight. Hopefully we will see him make a letter tomorrow?? Another good day

Sam is doing rooftops!!

DAY 2 FLEDGE WATCH DON MILLS/AMEXON:  A good day! Though he made me wait to see him fly til the END of the day lol. Bruce opened the watch at 615am(!) and found Sam on the rooftop of 250! Way to go Sam! Then he saw several flights… Mom guided him from there to the top ledge of the nest building. He didn’t want to stay there and flew back to 250. When I arrived he was on the rooftop of 250, and there he stayed ALL day lol. Though to be fair, he spent about 2 hours facing a different direction each… Taking it all in I guess. Bruce left around 10am, Sally joined me around 215. We did have some excitement when an adult male peregrine decided, for some reason, to come by. Both parents were on him in a flash and drove him to hit the Goodlife sign on the parking garage, and drop, flying into the 4th floor of the parking garage and, as Sally and I found out(we checked every level to make sure he wasn’t injured there)  out the other side, out of the parents angry reach. Whew. Then the parents had a nice bonding time, food included, on the Forrester sign(where they could watch Sam from). Mark and Marion came for the evening watch, and I headed home to feed the pets! Of course Sam flew over to the rooftop of the nest building while I was gone lol. He got packages delivered by both parents! I came back in time to see him fly back to the rooftop of 250! The other flight his landing was quite poor but this one wasn’t bad. He attempted later to fly back to 150 rooftop, missed, dropped a bit, recovered and flew back, trying for the rooftop of 250, but he’d lost just a bit of altitude and landed on the 2nd ledge, well touched feet first on the glass and dropped gently onto the ledge. And there we left him at the end of the night. Cooler temps tomorrow so hoping for more flights and landings!

DAY ONE AND SAM HAS FLEDGED!!

June 25, 2022 - Toronto - Don Mills and Eglinton - Amexon

Cathy Kerr Reports:

DAY ONE FLEDGE WATCH DON MILLS/AMEXON :  And Sam fledged!! Before I got there lol. Arrived to find no one in sight. Oh oh. Bruce had arrived just before me and said hadn’t seen anyone. So he did a walk about and I kept an eye on the nest ledge and checked nearby rooftops and ledges. As Bruce was coming back, we both saw dad land on the CPPlan sign. Good! Seconds later I saw Sam pop up about midway down the building on a ledge beneath Dad!! Yayyyy, fledged and didn’t lose too much height. So we set up in the shade(another hot one) and watched him walk the ledge. Mom & Dad tried so hard to get him off that ledge. Bruce left around noon. I watched as the sun came around and slowly he was out of shade. But he stayed. Parents landed beside him, above him, flew repeatedly by him, encouraging him to get off that hot ledge. To no avail. Mom finally brought him food around 3pm. He tore into it lol. But still stayed. Sally and Bruce joined me around 430. I left shortly after to feed my pets. Of course a half hour after I left, he took a second flight, missed 150 and came back and landed one floor down from where he left! He got fed a few more times, beak fed by mom this time. And that’s where we left him at close. Hopefully he gets another flight in tomorrow before the bad weather arrives (rain and thunderstorms are in the forecast). But all in all, a good day!!

Hello Sam!!

Cathy Kerr Reports:

UPDATE DON MILLS /AMEXON :  Our little Sam isn’t so little anymore! He’s looking really good, sitting up looking out on the great big world. Not much fluff left on him so he’s been working out lol. And he’s got a good set of lungs on him too! I’ve been trying to see him every day this week and going tomorrow to watch a bit more before the official start of the fledge watch on Saturday. Hope he flies strong and high! Stay tuned….

Banding day at Don Mills and Eglinton Amexon Nest. June 10th 2022.

June 10, 2022 - Toronto - Don Mills and Eglinton - Amexon

Marion Nash Reports:

1 big boy 700 Grams band number C over 37 named Sam. We still put colored tape on his silver band just in case he turns up somewhere and we only get a partial band number the red tape on the other band will help us determine the rest of the number and who he is. He was very feisty during banding not only striking out with his talons but biting the gloved hands quite hard good for him as his attitude will someday serve him well.

Congrats to Holden & Nagata!!

Cathy Kerr Reports:

Good news at DON MILLS/AMEXON: We have a hatch!! Congrats to Holden and Nagata! Thanks to my son for coming up with me to check for a hatch…egg shell still there so very newly hatched!  I am hoping that I am right in seeing a small pip in the other egg. Won’t be going up again to check until banding…parents quite upset(rightly so) with our presence- walking to the car with our hard hats brought both out and circled over us, ushering us to our car lol. Good parents. As the banding is the only other time we’ll see them until they are ready to fledge(they are high and hidden), hope you enjoy the pics I quickly took of this little cutie

Update on Tardis hatch in 2019 Don Mills Eglinton Amexon.

May 16, 2022 - Toronto - Don Mills and Eglinton - Amexon

Marion Nash Reports:

We went down to the Toronto Downtown Sheraton nest to check on the nest and can confirm that the female is Tardis produced at the Don Mills and Eglinton nest site in 2019 and the male is Spicy P produced at Canada Square Young and Eglinton Toronto in 2019.

The pair was seen bowing and chuping at each other as well as beak touching so they are still a bonded pair and they stooped the windows as we passed going into the mechanical room to the nest hatch however there were no chicks and no eggs laid as of yet.

We will continue to check on the nest and will post updates if there are any eggs laid.
